RACING

With Prime Evil, our Sigma 400, you are getting the chance to race on a fast, yet comfortable boat equipped with the very latest electronics.

New sails for 2011 see us entering the "modern" racing era. We are changing from carrying 6 headsails to just 2 - a laminated roller-reefing Genoa and laminated Heavy Weather jib. Not only will this offer us a valuable weight saving, but it will also reduce fatigue from changing headsails and the chance of cock up when we do - all meaning we are more likely to change sail area at the right time rather than put it off. The space gained inside will also make life off watch more comfortable. The new Dyneema reinforced mainsail will give us good sail shape and yet also be tough enough for life offshore.

Our racing opportunities are open to all, though we would recommend having at least sailed before joining something like our Fastnet Campaign. John, our Chief Intsructor has been involved in helping train crews for the Clipper Round The World Race, a Sydney to Hobart race team and of course our own Fastnet and Round The Island Race entries.

We encourage our crews to try the different roles on board to gain a better understanding of the tasks, and to get involved in all aspects of the campaigns. You the crew are the ones who make the difference. Our Race Training / Sail Handling weekends offer further chances to develop your skills before getting out on the race course. Places are limited on these courses to ensure everybody gets involved. Cost £240 per head - or save by adding it to one of our race programmes. Our next race training weekend is from the evening of the 16-18th September.

Each year we offer individual places on a number of events including the Round The Island Race, and Portsmouth Parhelion series. Longer events include the Tour Des Ports - a week of racing around the Channel Islands and Cherbourg Pensinsula - and the bi-annual Fastnet Race.

The Round The Island Race 28th June -1st July 2012. If 2012's race is anything like this year's bring it on! Our crew worked hard in tough conditions to get 378th overall - not bad when there are over 1900 entrants. Prime Evil is already nearly full for next year, so we are looking to partner with another boat. Cost of the 3 days of the Round The Island Race is £240 per head. An optional Race Training Weekend is offered at a discounted rate to race crew members to allow them to get more out of racing with us. Register your interest by clicking on RTIR2012

Portsmouth Parhelion Series. This is a series of races held on Saturdays through October. With 2 races a day(except on the long race weekend), it is a great way to build racing experience. Join on the Friday night, race Saturday, then over to the Yacht Club for a couple of beers in the evening. Cost is £95 per head for the Saturday, or extend it to the Sunday for an extra £65. Discounts available for those interested in booking 3 races or more. Breakfasts and lunches included along with mooring and entry fees.

Held every 2 years, the Fastnet is regarded as one of THE classic offshore races. The 2011 Race saw us finishing 150th out of 350 entrants - a fantastic achievement. With 200 boats finishing in a two hour period, our finish in the early hours of the Friday was awesome - with lights everywhere! Requiring training, dedication and a sense of humour, by the end of the campaign you are likley to have logged over 1200 miles and experienced wide ranging conditions. There are a limited number of places for this event attracting new clients and old hands from our previous campaigns alike. We are already registering interest for 2013. In addition to our regular races open to the public, we also work with clients on a number of major industry regattas. These include the Manches Cup for the legal profession and Little Britain Challenge Cup for the construction industry. We enjoy getting to know our clients and helping them achieve their goals for these events - just some of the reasons Macfarlanes have been with us for 4 years now for the Manches Cup, and have already booked for their 5th year with us in 2011.
