TRAINING

Whether an experienced sailor, or a complete beginner, training from an experienced instructor will help you develop new skills, question and tweak existing ones, and offer reassurance and encouragement throughout the course.

In addition to the sailing public at large, Wetstuff also provides training to crews returning from the Clipper Ventures Round The World Race, and companies such as Raymarine and C-Map.

If you cannot see what you are looking for, or aren't sure which course if for you, then do please drop us a line so that we can help. The RYA scheme is designed so that you can drop into it at the level that is appropriate to your experience - if in doubt please call as experience shows we are more flexible than other schools. Our email is info@wetstuff.org.uk

Wetstuff runs the full range of practical RYA Offshore Sailing courses all year round from our Gosport base. This offers quick access to the Solent proper and the sheltered waters of historic Portsmouth Harbour on the rare occasions that the weather prevents us from venturing out.

Our training boat, Prime Evil, is one of the best around. At 40 feet in length, she offers good, flexible accommodation to the 4 students and the instructor. On deck, she is a joy to sail - retaining the ability for simple sailing while also having the controls that will help a more experienced sailor develop their skillls. Working closely with Raymarine, she also boasts the latest electronics around including 2 chart plotters and a radar.

With only 4 students on our RYA practical courses, they offer great value for money.

RYA Practical Courses :-

  • RYA Competent Crew - aimed at beginners, giving you the skills needed to be a useful crew member.
  • RYA Day Skipper - aimed at those with some experience, giving you the skills needed to skipper a yacht in known waters in sensible weather.
  • RYA Coastal Skipper - aimed at experienced Day Skippers, developing their skills to cope with heavier weather and longer passages.
  • RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal - the first "licence" to skipper a boat, mainly taken by those needing the qualification for their work.
  • RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore - for those wanting to skipper upto 60 miles offshore, or looking to have the recognition of having attained a world reknowned sailing qualification.

In addition to RYA practical courses, we have also designed our own range of short specialist courses. These range from our popular Heavy Weather Sailing Course - giving you the chance to try out the skills needed BEFORE the weather actually closes in, and our increasingly popular Race Training / Sail Handling course during which you get to grips with changing headsails, rigging and using spinnakers.

To complement our practical we courses, we run a selection of theory courses. These include Basic Navigation, Day Skipper and Yachtmaster theory, radio and radar courses. Where possible we like to run these course on Prime Evil - allowing you to learn the techniques in the environment you will use them, and see the "real world" tools. We always teach what we believe to be the simplest ways, you know ones that can actually be used in afloat!

RYA Theory Courses
  • 2 day Basic Navigation & Safety -an intruduction to safety and navigational skills needed to keep you safe on the water.
  • Competent Crew / Day Skipper theory - this 5 day course looks at navigation, rules of the road, weather, and passage planning to help you navigate more effectively afloat. Ideal if thinking of doing the Day Skipper Practical Course.
  • Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster theory - aimed at those looking to undertake longer passages, it takes the Day Skipper skills and refines them
  • For those experienced crew, or anybody wishing to brush up on their navigation we also have a 2 Day Basic Navigation course. This is a non-RYA course which only looks at navigational skills - an alternative to doing a full Competent Crew / Day Skipper theory course for experienced sailors.
Our theory courses are normally taught on board Prime Evil, allowing you to get to grips with the real tools of the trade with low student numbers. If there are 3 students, or more, we will teach in a classroom, but take advantage of Prime Evil's nav kit for some sessions.

As an alternative to our traditional theory courses, we have also tied up with Centaur Sailing in order to offer you the a distance learning option - great if you prefer to learn at your own pace. Centaur also offer you the chance of doing the Yachtmaster Ocean theory. To find out more please click on www.centaursailing.com

Own boat tuition is something we love - the chance to go on different boats helping owners get more out of their time afloat is always a pleasure. Our instructors have sailed boats ranging from dinghies, to cruisers traditional and modern, through to high tech racers and ultra-traditional square-riggers.

In addition to our regular RYA and specialised courses, we are also able to offer bespoke training tailored to your needs.
